Design Intent
Hawthorn is predominantly characterised by Victorian and Edwardian homes, typically featuring red or white painted brick and white weatherboards. Interspersed among these traditional styles are contemporary residences, and many of the older homes have been updated with modern extensions at the rear. Notable examples include the “Hawthorn Gable House” by the Splinter Society and “Helen House” by DX Architects, which blend contemporary design elements with the suburb’s historic character.
This project draws inspiration from modern architecture while incorporating traditional materials such as brick and wood in innovative ways. The design aims to simulate a scenario where an existing Victorian dwelling undergoes a modern extension, featuring open plan living, large windows, and a mix of skillion and gable roofs.
Sustainability is a key focus. In alignment with Boroondara Council’s 2024 Backyard Biodiversity Project, native plants will be integrated into the landscaping to promote local wildlife and support biodiversity. Environmentally conscious materials, including recycled brick and Weathertex weatherboards, will be used, while passive design strategies will reduce energy consumption.
The dwelling is positioned on the southeast corner of the court, with main living areas and bedrooms rotated 15° east of north to maximise sunlight in the mornings and improve daytime comfort. Eaves and deciduous vegetation to the north will shade the home during summer, while ceiling fans in bedrooms and living spaces reduce reliance on air conditioning. Overall, the design combines contemporary form, traditional materials, and sustainable principles to create a home that is comfortable, energy-efficient, and in harmony with its context
